Bookcases are an often overlooked part of a room’s decor. People tend not to pay much attention to the bookcase itself, focusing more on the contents thereof. But a beautiful, well crafted bookcase can mean the difference between an elegant room and a room that leaves much to be desired.

Built-in bookcases are the most beautiful alternative for a library, den or study. A dark Oak Bookcase can set the tone for a victorian den or office. Once you picture that, your mind immediately goes to deep green leather chairs and ottomans, to cigars and brandy by the fire. Bookcases are a way to combine the need for storage and style in a home.

If you’d like to diminish the attention a bookcase might bring, you can always paint the bookcase the same color as the wall, showcasing its contents rather than the wood itself. For a statement piece, some colorful patterned wall paper can be placed at the back of the bookcase. This gives it style and can be a point of interest in the room.

When functionality is the main concern, plastic or metal shelves can double as a bookcase. This can give the room a more industrial look, particularly to a loft space, or a bachelor apartment. Painting them a bold color can further the effect. Bookcases fulfill the need for storage in a stylish way. The materials used to build them, and how intricate the designs are determine the intention of the designer.

I’ve always felt that wood tells a story. Different types of wood say different things to the observer. A pine bookcase reminds me of a log cabin in the woods. Pine has a much more casual approach to decor. It’s more homey, more cozy. It dresses down a room in a very contemporary way.

When shopping for a bookcase, you have to take into account the purpose of the room, as well as your main idea for the design of the room. The placement of the bookcase is also essential. Is is the first thing you see when you walk into the room? Will the bookcase frame a fireplace or door?
What do you intend to use the bookcase for? Books, or something more? Are you planning to place your TV and other entertainment equipment in it? If so, you have to take into account the dimensions of these bookcases before making a decision.
